Getting up early, baking bread and bonding with the Housemates - Corey is making a concerted effort to be an active member of the House, to be diplomatic, to be helpful and to be up before midday.
Baking the bread is a big deal in the BB House and lucky for the Housemates, Corey proved to be good at the job when he joined Travis for the first bread making bout. With Travis conceding he was no pastry chef, it was the young House Guest teamed with his shrewd chaperone that showed them the way to tame the toast - saving the day and the lunch.
Corey took it upon himself to help Travis who was clearly struggling at even reading the recipe, though initially Terri wasn’t too sure about this culinary match up. “Have you done it before?” Terri inquired of Corey. Corey nodded. “Oh, you have?” Terri reacted, very surprised.
Corey told Travis he made cookies for four years while he was at school and though he wasn’t proficient in baking bread, he had somewhat of an idea. Clearly Travis didn’t, and was just trying to be helpful so he was happy for the assistance. Travis told Corey, “Good job man. You’re doing really well, like with the whole baker thing because I’d have no idea.”
Corey took the reigns in the kitchen, discussing the importance of letting the yeast rise while Travis measured out the flour. This was serious business. But the massive mound of mixture soon caught Terri’s keen eye.
After thorough inspection Terri announced, “Two and a half cups it says. You put two and a half kilos!”
“I told you it was too big, I thought it was too big,” declared Corey. The boys realised that they’re measuring was not up to scratch and it was no wonder when Travis blurted, “There’s 600 mls in a cup…”
Even Corey and Terri connected over the bread making, when Travis was banished from the command centre and demoted to assistant of the duo.
“Corey’s doing great … he’s making bread,” Terri announced to the House.
“I have got to say Corey, you’re a lot better at this bread making than me,” Travis conceded. “I did cooking in Year 6 ‘til Year 10,” Corey told him.
Awarded with the praise of the household for his first bread making attempt, Corey soon started work on the sequel. The next day, Operation Bake the Bread was bigger and better. Orange bread was the follow up and with that, Corey was welcomed into the hearts and stomachs of the Housemates.
At last night’s family dinner, the question was raised ‘Is Corey welcome?’ Housemates agreed he was a great addition to the family. “I guess so,” Brigitte teased. “He’s pretty good at making orange bread.” Dixie agreed: “I'd say yeah too … I like your bread.”
But that was only the beginning, as Housemates agreed Cory was making an effort and had surprised them all.
Alice said Corey had been a great addition. “He's been proactive about everything that this house has – [and he’s] embraced the communal nature of this place.” Alice said she was impressed that he hadn’t sat back – instead he’d contributed and been a fun member of the BB family.
Even Bianca agreed she liked having Corey in the House and her initial reaction was off base. “After spending time with you … I've realised I got it wrong.”
Perhaps buoyed by their feedback, last night while the rest of the HMs slumbered, Corey was up - at 4am - baking the morning's bread.
It seems Corey really is the Bread Winner of the House.
