Terri’s re-entry has been nothing but controversial. As Corey’s chaperone and the oldest in the House she was immediately pigeonholed as the ‘mother’. A title that was more an insult than a compliment, as Housemates openly admitted they didn’t want, nor thought they needed, a mother figure in the House.
“She’s come in here and tried to be the mother figure of the House,” David expressed to a crew of boys hanging out in the Kombi. “She can’t come in here and mother us,” Saxon added defiantly. The blokes agreed she just didn’t fit into the group and though it was unfortunate - she’s just too different and her age is an obvious divide.
“I still can’t understand why she wants to be here?” Nathan questioned. Nobbi informed him that Terri had announced on many occasions: “she wanted to be the first grandmother on Big Brother and to show that not all old people are bitter.” The boys laughed at the last comment as they discussed how bitter they thought she was. David said if he was her age he wouldn’t put up with 20 year olds running around beds laughing and carrying on. “Why would you put yourself through it?” David exclaimed.
Terri was determined and has tried to find her place in the House. She’s made an effort to fit into life in a House of youngsters taking on the challenge of chin-ups, climbing trees and even piping up to comment on the hottest topics of discussion in the House, adding her own two cents.
Terri talked to Housemates, who she calls the “young ones”, about the generation gap, about how things were different “in [her] day” and how her time was just “a different era all together.” But no one really listened. Similar to her first night back in the House where Terri shared her life story and Housemates sat yawning and staring blankly there seems to be a lack of interest in this baby boomer’s chronicles. "Was that like back in the 1900s?" Brigitte asked Terri, who was visibly annoyed by her comments and ignorance.
But that’s not to say Terri’s has been flying completely solo during her time in the House – she has found sounding boards in both Nathan and Bianca. The other ladies of the BB House are definitely not members of the Terri fan club, having no qualms voicing their dislike for the BB Grandma. “I don’t like her,” complained Dixie. “She’s an old cow. I just don’t like her attitude towards my homie Nobbi.” Alice and Rebecca chimed in, adding they also don’t like her attitude either and think she’s picking on Nobbi.
So what does Terri think of her young Housemates? “A few weeks down the track when you really get to know them of course your opinions do change,” Terri revealed to Big Brother. “Dave I thought was, you know, a really cool guy, but now I just think he’s an immature fool sometimes.”
Terri continued her tirade in the Diary Room. “Bianca I thought was a nice sophisticated young lady but now I see her as a bit of a loner and a bit … I think silly and I didn’t think she was like that when I first met her,” she continued.
“I think Saxon is very much an odd ball… just a few things that’s he’s said have made me think that he’s strange.”
Surprisingly, Terri revealed a soft spot for Rory. “Rory, oh Rory is a real surprise packet … to me he seems like a really lovely,” Terri confessed.
Will Terri bridge the generation gap? Or is she destined to remain on one side of the divide, and the rest of her HMs on the other?
